Alex’s Wine Tour in Tuscany, Italy

Back in January, our wine connoisseur for Fallowfields, Alex, took the opportunity to embark on a wine-tasting journey across South America, visiting renowned vineyards and sampling some of the continent’s finest wines. More recently Alex flew to Italy, where he explored the charming vineyards of Tuscany and discovered the region’s delicious and delicate wines. Find out more about his latest adventure and what he uncovered along the way…

What Vineyard Did You Visit?

“Shown above is my visit to Marchesi Antinori in Chianti Classico. One of the oldest producers in Italy, it was established in 1385 and has been producing wine for 26 generations.”

One of the highlights of my recent trip to Tuscany was visiting the iconic Marchesi Antinori estate in the Chianti Classico region. Nestled among rolling hills and ancient vineyards, this remarkable winery is not only one of the oldest in Italy but also one of the most influential in the world of wine. The Antinori family has been producing wine since 1385, and with 26 generations of winemaking tradition behind them, their passion and dedication are evident in every bottle.

Walking through the estate was like stepping into a living piece of history. The architecture of the winery blends beautifully into the Tuscan landscape, with a modern yet respectful design that pays homage to centuries of heritage. During my visit, I had the chance to taste some of their most celebrated wines — each one a perfect balance of elegance, complexity, and character.

What struck me most was how the Antinori family continues to innovate whilst honouring their roots. Their commitment to sustainability, quality, and tradition makes this a must-visit destination for any wine lover. Whether you're a seasoned connoisseur or just beginning your journey into Italian wines, Marchesi Antinori offers an unforgettable experience that perfectly captures the spirit of Tuscany.

What Did You Get Up To?

I had the privilege of taking a guided tour around the Marchesi Antinori facility, where I gained a deeper understanding of the intricate production processes behind Italian — and more specifically, Tuscan winemaking. From the careful selection of grapes to the aging process in beautifully crafted oak barrels, every step is carried out with remarkable precision and a deep respect for tradition. It was fascinating to see how centuries-old techniques are blended with modern innovation to produce wines that are both timeless and forward-thinking.
