Spring Has Arrived at The Lizard
We love and embrace all the seasons, from moody grey winters, to bright blue summers, but no seasonal change is more beautiful, nor noticeable, than the arrival of spring.
The slow transition along our coastline has many recognisable signs that tell us spring is here. But what exactly should we look out for? From new arrival of animals to colourful bursts of flora, here is our list on what to look out for this spring.
Basking sharks
Look out down below for giant basking sharks, from April and into early summer, as they swim around the Lizard coast and especially in the headlands such as Lizard Point.
But don’t be scared by their size…they might be the second largest fish in the sea but they are completely harmless to humans, as they only eat microscopic animals called zooplankton!
Cornish Choughs
The famous wild Cornish Choughs, known for their curved bright red beak and red legs, naturally re-started their breeding territory at Lizard Point back in 2001 and have remained a local since. Although rare to spot, don’t be put off looking out for them along our coastlines.
Northern Gannet
Flocks of the UK’s largest seabird are often seen along the high clifftops. Although they do not breed locally, they choose to travel here from their colonies on the northern coast of France, even as far away as the Welsh island of Grassholm.
4. Coastal wild flowers
Coastal wild flowers have a hard time growing amongst the harsh coastal elements, battling sea-spray and high winds. But despite this, a number of flowers manage to make it into spring and put on the most colourful displays along our Lizard coastline. Here’s what to look out for;
Spring Squill - A sky blue star shaped six-petalled flowers, with a dark blue bracts at the base.
Sea Campion - A pure white or white with a hint of pink or mauve petalled flower.
Thrift - A dwarf evergreen that has small white or pink flowers.
Long headed clover - A long yellowish white flowering spike of pea-like flowers.
